Introduction Series – Interview with Kim Maglinti

June 1, 2010 · 73 comments

Today I have a special treat for you. It’s the first ever audio interview that I’ve ever recorded in my blogging career. One of the reasons I wanted to do this was to get out of the “celebrity spotlight” for a while. Most of the people I have either written about have been for the most part are either a well-known person, a celebrity, or famous in some way. It’s not really necessary to be ridiculously well-known in order to share the failures and success of life. “Ordinary” people from all different types of backgrounds can also share something from their experiences that can be of value to other people.

So the person I decided to interview was Kim Maglinti, a coach, hypnotherapist, and consultant. One of her main goals is helping aspiring creative artist stand out in their performances by helping them increase creativity, overcome fears, build confidence, reduce performance anxiety, and manage stress. Her techniques help artists tap into their true potential and express it in a way that captivates and moves their audience.

Some of the topics we talk about in our conversation are:

  • Where she is located in the world in case you should contact her
  • Who she is in her own words
  • Some of her greatest struggles she went through in her life
  • What the cycle of life brings in her opinion
  • A powerful analogy for thinking about goals
  • What some of the things she does to help her well-being
  • How to make goals more effective
  • The benefit of playing four different types of instruments
  • Her basic philosophy in life
  • Her advice for people when things aren’t going their way

Since it’s my first time podcasting, I was really nervous. I was kind of hesitant to do this entire thing in the beginning and setting up the podcast was also somewhat difficult for me as I’m not really a tech savvy person, so you will hear that the first ten seconds of the interview is kind of off. I’m trying to say, “Hi, welcome to the first podcast at From Bottom Up.”

Finally, I apologize for all the mumbling and many, many hesitant pauses as I try to scramble for words to say. I think this is why I’m more of a writer and not a communicator! But oh well, it’s out there now and there’s nothing I can do about it but move on. So I hope you get something out of this and I hope you enjoy the conversation.

Interview Time: 11:22

Congratulations on your first podcast, Hulbert! What a fun change of pace. I love Kim’s description of herself as a “perpetual student.” I really enjoyed hearing Kim’s personal story and appreciate her sharing her experiences with us.

Hi Jean, thanks for being the first person to comment on my first podcast. You will be remembered. :) I like Kim’s approach too as she kind of identifies herself as a student that’s always learning. I’m really glad she was able to do this interview with me and share some of her experiences here. Thanks again Jean!

This was an excellent podcast, Hulbert. You did really well (and you should never admit you are nervous because no one can tell, I promise you!) I was so touched by Kim’s story and so very sad to hear of her losses. And inspired with her train analogy, her self-discipline to keep everything on track and her reasons to initially get involved in self-improvement. THANK YOU for choosing a great candidate for your first podcast!

But I was! I actually listened to the interview again and I think I was half and half. Yeah I had no idea that the first person I interviewed was going to bring that out on me as it caught me off guard, but anything goes and I didn’t want her to hide anything as I think that makes us stronger people. I’m glad that she was so candid with me. I loved her train analogy too. Thanks for the kind words Farnoosh!

Hulbert, your podcast is not as bad as you imagine. I give you kudos for stepping outside of your comfort zone. It sounds as if this was a learning experience for you and you’ll get better with practice. Repetition will allow you to become more comfortable.

This is an interesting (and relevant) break from your normal posts and also inspiring because you remind us that everyday people have great stories as well.

“Finally, I apologize for all the mumbling and many, many hesitant pauses as I try to scramble for words to say” — a bit advice that I learned the hard way: Don’t try so hard to find the exact words. Sometimes we put too much pressure on ourselves and create our own problems.

11 Hulbert Lee June 1, 2010 at 1:06 pm

Hi Jake, what you said here was very encouraging. I think I just critique myself too much which was something that Kim pointed out that human beings do to themselves. I definitely will keep trying and hopefully I will get better with practice. Thank you for your advice Jake!

Great points Jake. Like your first day at a new job — it takes practice to settle in and get comfortable. I agree, we sometimes put too much pressure on ourselves. Heck, I couldn’t help but critique my own tone and inflection. I’ll get over hit ;)
Great to meet you.

Hi Hulbert,

I really, really enjoyed this podcast. It was a lot of fun to hear you interview Kim.

And I thought you did fine with the podcast. But it will get easier over time. I know I wasn’t comfortable doing video blogs at first. However, now it feels almost as normal as speaking to one of my good friends.

I give you a ton of credit for exploring different avenues with your blog. Keep up the fantastic work! :)

Love this podcast for a couple of reasons. We get to meet you, Hulbert, in a whole new way and you’ve introduced us to the lovely, Kim. She sounds like she has a very calm, yet focused personality. I love the train analogy, sounds very engaging and useful as a mental picture. I also love that yoga helps ease the perpetual to-do list that’s going on in her head. Great insights and a fun way to present them. Thanks Hulbert and Kim.

Yes, when you put me next to her, she sounded very calm and focused, haha. But seriously, she was very composed throughout the interview which is a good trait to have as a coach and I also very much enjoyed the things that she shared with us. Thank you so much for listening Katie.

Hi Hulbert!

Great podcast, I want to first off congratulate you on taking this step in your blogging career. You did great! I agree with Farnoosh, you chose a great candidate for the interview. Kim’s story is very inspiring! I admire the fact that she was able take two deaths and use that as fuel to catapult her into helping others. I especially loved how she mentioned music as being something that inspires creativity and changes moods (for the better.) I live by these words because I am a musician as well. I have been playing drums for about 18 years and I love all genres of music. It has been something that I turn to for inspiration as well. Thanks for sharing this interview it really was a highlight of my day!

Hey Jarrod, I really appreciate the words from you here. I agree that Kim was a great candidate for the interview. It’s kind of unbelievable what she went through and still can have such a positive and influential impact towards others. It’s also good to see we have something in common. Kim with those instruments, you with the drums, I’ve also played the piano for about ten years of my life. Music is definitely something that can inspire all of us. Thanks for stopping by Jarrod!

Reply

24 Kim June 2, 2010 at 9:54 pm

Hi Jarrod,

I didn’t tell Hulbert that I paid you for the kind words ;) I’m kidding!

It’s almost indescribable how one can get lost in music. It’s sort of an escape to another world, like getting lost in a great fiction novel. It can create energy or dissipate energy, depending on your mood and depending on the song. Getting behind a set of drums must be so cool — energy and coordination at its best!

Thank you Jarrod!

Hello Katie,

I appreciate your kind words and positive feedback. I think Hulbert is wonderful. It’s almost a knee-jerk reaction to judge ourselves. I thought, ‘Ew, do I really sound like that? I need to relax’ and you perceived ‘focused and calm.’ I’m tickled by that!
Happy to meet you!

Hi Kim & Hulbert,
This was fantastic. I really enjoyed hearing both of your voices. It made it so much more personal.

Kim, I think that you’re absolutely right. Suffering loss shows us just how resilient we are. It also builds strength and character as you say. In my line of work – I come across a lot of people who cannot let go of their grief. After a while not accepting the loss (as Hulbert mentioned) not only hurts your growth it stifles the progress of growth on the other side for your loved one.

Kim, I also loved your advice about sticking to our talents. I’ve always believed that if your on the right path it should flow –

Hulbert, I loved hearing you ask the questions that you asked. I think your interest in people and in understanding people really comes through.

Hulbert – thank you for letting us get to know Kim! I truly enjoyed this.

Hi Angela,

Thank you for your thoughtful words.
In the midst of life’s lessons it is sometimes hard to see the silver lining. It takes time before we can look back with clarity. Hulbert brought up a great point about the importance of letting go — the important part of grieving is reaching acceptance.

Hulbert, you’re brilliant at working off the cuff :)

Great interview!

Very inspiring story. I like the format of your interview (audio), too .

@Hulbert – I like the idea of interviewing and posting about someone who is not “famous”. I think in the long run, your readers will benefit more by seeing more “regular” people. Either way you go, keep up the good work!

Take care!

Great job you two. I love being able to put a voice to your pictures. I can see and hear that you know your stuff, Kim. I love that you were able to convert your stumbling blocks into stepping stones. When we can clean up the drama that hampers us, the Authentic Self – the solver of all our problems – is able to shine through. Clearly you both are shining brightly. You have a keen eye for gaining new insights and learning/teaching new lessons. I thought the Train metaphor was very practical… and, if it ain’t practical, it ain’t spiritual!

The feeling is mutual Rob as I have enjoyed your video! It certainly helps to be a part of a community that supports ‘shining brightly’ vs. wallowing in drama. My challenges are no different than the next person. I’m fortunate that they have served my growth, have led me to helping others, and meeting like minds in the personal development realm.

Hi Dia,

It’s all about balance. If we do not care for ourselves, we cannot effectively help others. This reminds me of a flight attendant who instructs the adults / parents to don their oxygen mask in case of an emergency… We are then more useful to others around us!
Great to see you here!

Hi Hulbert! First time visiting your blog. I enjoyed the interview and really connected with Kim’s advice on when things aren’t going your way. “Trying not to force it” and “Sticking with your strength” are things I need to remember to do when things aren’t going my way. I kinda go into the “make things happen” mode when I’m down that path. Go with the flow I guess.

Your voice was fine! I, too, tend to mumble and have many hesitant pauses when I’m talking to beautiful women. =)

Reply

56 Hulbert Lee June 3, 2010 at 12:29 pm

Hi John, welcome! I think instead of forcing it, take a step back and get yourself in a state where you are more clear and positive. That makes getting things done a lot easier.

Oh cool, it’s good that I can relate to someone else who has problems speaking too.

Haha! I like what you said at the end there… Did you hear that Kim?

Reply

57 Kim June 4, 2010 at 11:10 am

Hi John,

Thank you for the complement *blush* I’m happy that you found your first time here engaging. Hulbert has a gift — he’s sticking to his ‘strengths.’ ;)

The points you focused on reminds me of a quote… ‘Be like water.’ Every so often, I remind myself to ‘go with the flow’ and remain flexible to balance my ‘make things happen’ side. It’s about calming the inner taskmaster.
